Fleetwood Mac’s “Never Going Back Again,” off their classic 1977 album “Rumors” has always been one of my
absolute favorite songs to play on guitar, with both intricate, challenging finger work and the kind of
bouncy pop-rock genius only Lindsey Buckingham could deliver.
In mastering this song, I have encountered several differing ways to play it. The most common arrangement
(Drop D, Capo IV) is the simplest alternate tuning solution, and is how Lindsey can usually be seen playing
the song live, but can make getting the correct chord voicings difficult for the hands. The other
(CGDGBE, Capo VI), which Lindsey has claimed is how it was originally played in the studio, uses more
easily-fretted and picked open strings and better demonstrates the song’s signature sound rocking back and
forth on a major fourth between G-major and C-major chord shapes and the chorus’ high treble notes. While it
is easiest on the fingers, one can often get an undesired buzz from how low the bass strings must be tuned,
and plucking them gently enough can detract from the energy of the song.
Adapting from this, I have figured out how to play this piece using standard tuning, eliminating the hassle
of obscure tunings and taking advantage of the best parts of the song’s other possible arrangements. Without
retuning, the song’s bass line is played an octave higher than the lower tones you hear on the record, but
still holds down the low end in this adaption. Some quick changes between chords are required that can be
taxing to the fingers, and fretting with the thumb even comes into play. But this particular arrangement
allows for hassle-free playing of this incredible song as close to the original recording as possible,
faster, and unencumbered by altered tunings, and I believe even allows one to display the plinking, tight
guitar sound that is a signature of Lindsey Buckingham’s playing style and incorporates some slight
variations that you’ll often hear during live performances of this song. Enjoy!
