A A2 F# E x E x E x B 10 B 9 B 7 G 9 G 9 G 6 D 7 D 7 D 4 A x A x A x E x E x E x I know the chords are strange. I had to get as close as I could with the names... The way you play this song is the most important part about it, and if you listen to it while practicing these chords it'll just come to you like nothing. but for those of you who, for some sad sad reason don't have this album, i'll explain it to you.... it's played in a very SKA way, which is to say there's a lot of whole hand releases. since the system of running the chords never changes - it's very important that you understand the changes in the way you do the system. during the verse, it played A d u d u A2 d u d u F# d u d u d u d over and over. d's of course mean down stroke, u's of course mean upstrokes. you let each ring for about one sixteenth of a second, then pull your hand up a little. chorus is played A d u d u d u d A2 d u d u d u d F# d u d u d u d u d u with the same pull off procedure. you're not ALL that stupid. if you know how it's played already, you shouldn't have bothered reading all that. but, it can help those out there not farmiliar with the song. -----aaron kinney [email protected] "old friend" rancid from their album ...and out come the wolves transcribed by lance morris okay. here's the more correct tablature for "old friend" by rancid. i read aaron kinney's version, and he explains the ska strum pretty well, although i can't understand why anyone who is covering rancid songs wouldn't know how to play ska. anyway, the chords are way off. if you play the song that way, it completely doesn't sound right. it's a basic chord progression, also used in bush's "glycerine" and green day's "when i come around. during the intro, play: Bm D Bm D Bm D A E play through twice, then: chorus A E good morning heartache F#m D you're like an old friend, come to see me again A E F#m D wake up, you're in cleveland again A E F#m D it's a solid line that never ends i got stories that you'll never believe and i know it, i wear it, i wear it on my sleeve there must be something 'bout you that i liked but right here in this rain, you know it just don't seem right i always go out, i never hide but in cleveland, i should've stayed inside chorus A E F#m D justify my love for you and i know it runs deep through your body too from the cold blacktop to the hot concrete in the old tin van, it ain't so sweet chorus intro X 2 A5 E5 F#5 D5 somewhere in america A5 E5 F#5 D5 in the city at night A5 E5 F#5 D5 we were far from home, A5 E5 F#5 D5 but you know, everything's gonna be alright solo play chorus form A E F#m D the unfortunate get preyed on by vultures' eyes 86 cents in these pockets of mine you can take my money, you can take my time but you can't take my heart, it's in the city behind chorus A5 E5 F#5 D5 A5 Bm D A E F#m e 2 x 5 x 9 B 3 7 5 9 10 G 4 7 6 9 11 D 4 7 7 9 11 A 2 5 7 7 9 E x x 5 x x all of these are basic bar chords. aaron kinney had you playing wierd power chords. the only place power chords are used here are on verse three and the outro. A5 E5 F#5 D5 e x x x x B x x x x G x x x 7 D 7 2 4 7 A 7 2 4 5 E 5 0 2 x aaron's intro lead is pretty right. i recommend just picking it up by listening. that's the great thing about rancid, is that their leads are easy to pick up. you don't really need to do this song ska style. it's a great song no matter what. just use the chords and play it your own way.
